Kiln at Warm Earth Pottery
We fired these pots in a kiln we built. This is a downdraft type of kiln using four Venturi burners where the fuel is sucked into the bottom sides via the burners and pulled up through the top section and then down through the kiln shelves where the pots are positioned, then the heat exits out of the bottom back area of the kiln and up through the flu.
We control the atmosphere inside the kiln during the fire to create a reduction atmosphere by controlling the flow of oxygen through the Venturi burners. This atmosphere forces the glazes to change colors, depending upon the glaze formulas where the lack of oxygen will create various colors. In this case the copper and tin oxides cause the color to go to red or plum in a reduction atmosphere, as opposed to a green color in an oxidation type atmosphere.
