A look inside top kiln plug
This is where we can see the cone packs inside the kiln during the fire. We pull the soft brick plug out of this port and take a look at not only the flame color but the eventual melting of the cone pack (cone 9, 10, 11) which tell us the accurate temperature inside the kiln during the firing of the kiln. This view is crucial to know how hot the kiln is in order to fire the glazes on the pots to the temperature we want.
In this fire we went to cone 9 melted down, cone 10 almost all the way down and cone 11 just beginning to melt at about 2395 degrees Fahrenheit! True stoneware as no metal can cut our ceramics— only diamond can cut our products. These pots will outlast most other materials on the planet for thousands of years, being fired to these high temperatures. Crazy eh…..
